Why support us?
Without the proper care, special needs children are marginalized by society. At the start of this decade it was calculated that close to 70% of incarcerated youth have learning disabilities or an emotional disturbance . The need for quality Special Education programs is growing: Just this month (February 2007), an article in the New York Times placed the number of children with autism or a related disorder like Asperger's syndrome at 1 in 150 children born in the United States. The Child School/Legacy High School has over 30 years of experience and passion necessary to take up the challenge of preparing this new generation of special needs children to lead productive lives!
Over 30 years of success!
The Child School/Legacy HS can boast an over 30 year record of success educating children with learning, social/emotional and developmental disabilities. 82% of our students graduate with a Regents or RCT diploma and have gone on to attend such prestigious universities as NYU, Marymount College, and the Rochester Institute of Technology, among others.
Our proposed Media Lab
We want to expand our many programs to include a Media Lab for our students. By creating a studio for radio and television production, our children would be exposed to different media of communication that would be used to enhance memory; public speaking; writing and comprehension skills. It would offer each student the opportunity to explore his or her own sense of self-awareness and to investigate how his or her behavior is perceived by others. More importantly, the lab would offer our students skill sets that they could apply in the real job market.
How you can help!
. Come and bid on one of these fabulous items on Sunday, June 3rd 2007.
. Make a donation for the Media Lab itself!
